So, I was at work today, up on the ladder about 5 or so metres and I thought, 'Hey! What if Link was afraid of heights?!'
That then got me thinking about the stories that I've read. Link is always seen to be afraid of very little. He is always daring and bold. Of course he does have the Triforce of Courage. But let's remember that courage is not the lack of fear but the willingness to act in that fear. So, what if Link had some phobia? He fears heights, water, spiders, whatever. What if some phobia was Link's weakness?

In the Wind Waker, Link seems to be startled by a lot of things... I think that might be because he was caught off guard by an enemy, though. It would be interesting if Link had a phobia of some sort. Kind of like Indiana Jones doesn't like snakes (Is that right? It's been so long since I've seen those movies). I guess if you're saving Hyrule and fighting all those monsters you've got to have some steady nerves. If I were Link, though, I'd be dead frightened of spiders... cuz I really do hate spiders.

Yes, but what about before Link fights all of those monsters? You are not born with steady nerves and a fearless nature. He would have to build up to it. I guess that is the kind of effect I'm trying to get in my story.

That's very true. In my story, Link is actually quite a jitterbug before he does any fighting: always jumping and jolting at even the slightest tap on the shoulder. That's just how I've interpreted him, though... (BTW, started reading your story on ffn, Tiki. It's amazing!) What if Link were afraid of going out of the house... that would have been a boring game...

Afraid to go out of the house? What if Link was a germaphobe?! That would make for one interesting and funny story.

This is going to sound a little weird but I used to have the idea that Link was scared of lightning (I've never used this idea in a story since I don't believe it as much anymore).
I got the idea because I think the night his mother left him in the forest was a stormy night so whenever he saw lightning it reminded him of that time. Not that babies can remember much but you never know...

If anybody is old enough to remember the old Zelda comics from Nintendo Power, Link was kind of hesitant (and arrogant at times) when he started his adventure (it's the story about the Link to the Past). I've also seen him in a couple of fics that he does have fears about doing certain things during his adventure. I think if a writer does make him bold and fearless, without being afraid of anything, it makes him unnatural because he is still a person and people are always afraid of something. I guess in a sense you could say they've made him into a Mary Sue of sorts.

Here's an idea I'm playing with that kinda fits this thing of Link's fears. In my story when Link first goes to Market Town he is scared of the adults because he thinks that they are giants. Remember now, he's only been in Kokiri Forest and only knows of people being children. Sure they have myths about the outside world but Link is going to be terrified and yet drawn to talk with them. Something along those lines anyway. Someone should give Link a true phobia. As in, he is scared to death of that something and will not go near it, etc. Heh. He could be scared Zelda.

Interesting idea. It will certainly be something to anticipate if you ever decide to incorporate it in a fic. And what if Link had total girl phobia, not just Zelda fears? Just imagine how frightened he would be all the time!

That woulda been hilarious! I would have thought, though, that he was afraid of fire. I might be wrong about the fear (eg. Fire Temple), but didn't the beginning of OoT show that there were roaring fires that his mother had to get through to get to the forest? He doesn't have to remember any of it to be afraid of fire. Such things would be embedded at the back of his mind forever. Just throwing that out there...

Kinda fits with Kaz's post about Link fearing lightning. In my story Link is afraid of heights but it isn't a phobia. Someone really should give Link a phobia. Even if for only comic reasons. Heh, he could be afraid of the Deku Tree. Hey, I would be afraid of a giant talking tree that has a face.

He seemed to be pretty scared of the Gorons right after the Dodongo's Carvern... Maybe he could be afraid of affectionate Gorons? (But then again, who wouldn't be? )

Well, wouldn't you be scared of three rock-hard Gorons trying to give you a tight bear hug after defeating Dodongo's Cavern? I know I'd be hightailing my rear out of there faster than a rolled up Goron on a muddy slope.

Like I said; "Who wouldn't be?" Lmao I would be outta there faster than a puff of wind XD
I was just listening to Unwell by Matchbox 20, and I suddenly thought "Hey, what if Link had some sort or mental disease or paranoia?" XD Something different.
