Reading is one of my favorite things to do in my spare time. I absolutely love to read, and I think it would make an awesome topic for discussion. One request, though... please no fanfiction here. Not that I don't love fanfiction (cuz I do!) but maybe we can make a different thread for discussions on those kinds of stories... Anyways, I love reading a variety of genres and stories. I'm a bit of a snob for canonical lit, so some of my faves are Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, David Copperfield (by Dickens, not the magician), The Mayor of Casterbridge, and Much Ado About Nothing. I read contemporary stuff too; I admit to being a total Harry Potter geek and I enjoy reading Lord of the Rings. Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, and Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God are all amazing as well. I'm also a total nonfiction junkie. I read Don't Eat This Book by Morgan Spurlock 3x, I loved Reviving Ophelia (a study on girls growing up today with the American media), and Growing Up by Russel Baker is a terrific biography. The only nonfiction I warn anyone against is Silent Spring, a scientific essay which could have probably been summed up into three words: pesticides are bad. I'm rambling, though. Maybe if someone else contributes, this topic will have a little more direction... maybe, lol.

I like the Frank Peretti novels like "The Visitation", "The Oath", and currently I'm working on "Monster". I love the "Chronicles of Narnia" series, and I've read all of those. I'm not too much into poetry, although I did buy Milton's "Paradise Lost" a few days ago after reading an exerpt for a class during the spring. All in all, I'm mostly into fiction reading or literal things with a ficticious portrayal. Other than that, though, I'm a big comics junkie.

OMG, I totally forgot about Frank Peretti until you mentioned him in that post. Maybe a couple years ago, I was a total Peretti fan. I read probably three or four of his books, including This Present Darkness. I, too, have read Chronicles of Narnia, but I didn't like them quite so much as LotR. They did get me interested in C.S. Lewis, though, so I went out and bought the first novel in space trilogy; I believe it was called Out of the Silent Planet. I thought that was pretty good. I have to read Milton's "Paradise Lost" for my English class... I'm not much into poetry either, though, so it's a bit of a boring read for me. And, oh yes, I'm a comics fan too... specifically manga.

I forgot that Out of the Silent Planet was written by C.S. Lewis! I have that one and the other two that go along with it in a giant trilogy book. I read the whole thing in like a month and it totally gripped me! Frank Peretti's children's books are what got me hooked on his writing, although I didn't buy one of his adult books until a couple of years ago. I've read through a couple of the Lord of the Rings books, but I can't stay interested enough in them to finish them. I enjoyed the movies, though (although they didn't exactly stick to the books). I love manga, although I've been sticking with ones that I know like DBZ and Yu Yu Hakusho.

My favorite books are the Redwall series...I've read the whole thing an avergae of five to six times, lol. I also love the Left Behind books too. Those make for some good reading. ^.^

I like the Left Behind books, too. I read the entire adult series within a month a couple years ago. I didn't have anything better to do, so I just sat down and started reading the first one. Once I started I found I couldn't put it down and I just kept moving to the next one after I was done with one. I also would read the kids books within the day that I got them. It was pretty cool how they tied everything together. There are other books out now that branch off the main Left Behind series that take the political and military point of views, too, though I can't remember who the authors are or what the titles are offhand. I've read the political ones, and they're pretty good.

I haven't read the Left Behind series, though I have read some of the Redwall books. They were quite good. I enjoyed them very much. I'm reading about ten different books right now: Crime and Punishment, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, Where the Girls Are, Don Quixote, Candide, Tess of the D'urbervilles, Fellowship of the Ring, Sexual Politics, Madame Bovary, and the Iliad. I'm so bad when it comes to starting too many books at one time. I really want to get them all read by the end of the summer, but it's going to be a lot of work! (enjoyable work, that is)

I love Peretti as well. I have four of his books I think. I've read all of them at least twice. LotR were pretty good books. I enjoy C.S. Lewis as well. Another great author is Terry Pratchett. A couple other books that I enjoyed: A Tale of Two Cities, A Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Sons of Fortune, War of the Worlds, Dragonlord Legends (from fictionpress), and I'm not going to list them all. Great topic, by the way. I was about to post up something similar.

I've never read the Left Behind version that's supposed to have kids or teens or whatever...just with adults. I've been thinking about doing that though if I ever run out of stuff to read again... I think I finished the adult series within a month too a long while ago, maybe two months because I remember having to wait for more to come out...right now I'm goin' through the prequels that have been comin' out recently.
I never could get into C.S Lewis' stuff for some reason...I remember despising them completely when we had to read some of 'em as a class assignment when I was in middle school. But now, I dunno what to think since I haven't attempted to read another one of his works in a long time.
I love LotR...I read 'em back when I was in 5th grade and over this summer I've been rereading them in between times when I have a book that I've never read before.
Anyone ever read the Earthsea trilogy? ^.^

I've heard of that trilogy but have never read. Also, I know nothing about it.

The Chronicles of Narnia just weren't that exciting for me. I did read the whole series, but that was more to satisfy myself knowing I'd read the whole series as opposed to reading on because I enjoyed the book so much. Still, I suppose they weren't horrible. Another author I enjoy in the sci-fi/fantasy category is Madeline L'Engle. She wrote A Wrinkle in Time and A Swiftly Tilting Planet. I haven't read anything by her recently, but her books stick with me. They're so imaginative! I'm afraid I've never heard of the Earthsea trilogy... Is it good? (Thanks for the kudos, Tiki. Loved Tale of Two Cities! )

A good sci-fi author is Frederik Pohl (I think that's how you spell his name, I'm too lazy to run upstairs and check ).

I liked the Earthsea trilogy when I read it. It's hard to explain what it's about though...I think it's been a year since I read it though I believe I read it twice. The second one was my favorite. ... Ah, I just found out there's been more added and it's no longer a trilogy...I'm going to check into that matter because it was a really old trilogy...and all of a sudden there's two more additions that I never knew about. Whoo-hoo, now I have more to pile on to what I wanna read. ^.^

Another few books I've found interesting are Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events". I've read the first three books, and there are six more I'm looking for an opportunity to buy and read. I liked C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia because they do the whole parallel universe thing. I like those kind of stories.

I started the Earthsea trilogy, and never got around to finishing the first book. Mostly cuz I put it off to read after other books. I love Left Behind and Redwall, as well as LoTR! I'm one of those not-so-big fans of The Chronicles of Narnia. The movie was pretty good, but when I read it back in Middle School I disliked it. Although, to me, it wasn't as bad as Great Expectations by Dickens which I read a while ago. I just thought that one was so boring. Has anyone ever read Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton? His sci-fi books are the best compared to his uh...non sci-fi books. The other one of his I really liked was called Sphere.
