I think we've all noticed the karma thing in our profiles. Whilst it may be fun to play with I've been thinking and I've got an idea. What if, based on participation on the forums, users were awarded more karma? Of course, this extra karma would come from me. The idea would be something like this: You participate in the Story of the Month thread so I award you with, say, 10 karma points. Story of the Month, the debate section, Talk it up!, and general participation would each be cause for extra karma points. Here's a proposed amount of points for the mentioned items. This is just a proposed list. If you think other items should be added let me know. General posting: 3 Debate section: 5 Talk it up!: 10 Story of the Month: 12 Let me know what you think of this idea.

Karma comes from Hinduism and Buddhism. Your good deeds get rewarding in your next life and your bads deeds get punished. On the forums it's kind of like everyone's attitude toward you. Like they can exalt you, add 1 karma, if they think you're a good person. Or they can smite you, subtract 1 karma, if they think you are bad. Something to that effect. However, users can only add or subtract 1 at a time per time that you log in. However, I can add or take as many as I want whenever I want. I'm so powerful.

Yes, you do hold a lot of power, lol. Welp, not only have you cleared up that whole karma thing for me but you've also cleared up the smite and exalt thing as well. Thanks Now that I know more of the facts, I think I'll stick with my previous answer and say that I'm still up for your idea. ^.^

Another thing, when someones reaches a high enough level of karma then they can have a special title or ranking.

Y'know, I just kept hitting that button because I thought it meant you liked the user. (I think I've given just about everybody a karma... and I haven't smited anybody!) I was so happy when I got my first karma. (This is ridiculous. lol). Anyways, I love the idea of adding karma for posts, but I have two questions. 1) Don't you move up in rank for making posts anyway? Would that conflict with your karma? I mean, consider if somebody constantly posts in story of the month and gets loads of karma, but has only about ten actual posts, as opposed to somebody who makes 15 regular posts and contributes to more topics. Does karma rule over total # of posts, or are there separate ranks. 2) Isn't that a lot of work for you? To do that daily would probably get tiresome... are you just going to do it at the end of the week or something? Other than my two previous queries, I think it's a wonderful idea. I just hope nobody smites me...

I guess that all sounds pretty good. It's one more fun thing to keep shooting for.

Yeah, you can use karma if you like a person. Heh. Now to address your questions. 1) Yes, you move up in rank by simply posting. However, karma would not rule over this. There would be two seperate rankings. 2) It will probably be added weekly or perhaps bi-weekly (every two weeks). Daily would be too much work.

Mira, I think I was the first one to give you the karma. I'm like you in that I exalt everybody and I don't like to smite. I usually give karma to the one who has the lowest one at the time, and so new members usually get one pretty quick with me.

If and when the system is set up, I'm going to reset everyone's karma to 0. You guys will still be able to exalt or smite like before but if things get too out of hand I may have to do some smiting of my own. And trust me, my smiting is far worse than 1 karma being taken.

Okay, I think I've got the system worked out. Here's the new idea for karma points: General postings: 3 Debate section: 3 Writing Centre participation: 5 Talk it up!: 10 Story of the Month: 15 Karma ranks would go up similar to the rankings for posts. All of the ranks would start with 'Karma' and the second half would be what your rank is. For example, the first rank will probably be 'Karma Kid'. I'm not going to tell you all of them and ruin the surprise. Points will be tallied up once a week. The projected starting date for this will be the 14th. That gives us a week to discuss ideas and thoughts about 'karma points'.

I think the Debate section should be worth a little more because it's hard to write a debate post. There's a lot of thought that goes into your argument, while a general post is more of a casual type of conversation. I'd say probably switch the the numbers for Talk it up! and the Debate. That way, it might give a little extra incentive for people to jump into a debate. Just a thought, though.

I like that. It seems more balanced, and it gives incentive to do the topics you wouldn't normally do.
